About
Will Nolan (b. 1979, Tarntanya/Adelaide) is an Australian multidisciplinary artist based in the Adelaide Hills. His practice is defined by observations of action that incorporate drawing, photography, sculpture, and installation. Through his continued exploration of memory and form, Nolan seeks to reveal the beauty within the quiet intersection of reality and the unseen, where intuition and process bring the work to a calibrated point of stillness, resulting in compositions that hold the subject in a state of contemplation.
In his most recent work, which includes drawings and photographs, Nolan further explores this metaphysical space through a monochromatic approach. From his use of collected objects in photographs to his expressive drawings, Nolan’s artwork acts as fragments—detached remnants of a larger, hidden whole. These ambiguous compositions strip the ordinary of its context, creating a temporary sanctuary suspended in time where simple spaces become stages for the subconscious.
Nolan’s professional trajectory is supported by a strong record of award nominations and publications; he has been short-listed for Bowness Photography Prize, Josephine Ulrick and Win Schubert Photography Award, and Olive Cotton Photographic Prize. His work has been featured in international publications such as Art Monthly (Australia), Esquire (Russia), and Kunstbeeld (Netherlands).
